For safety reasons, Finnair plans to weigh not only luggage but also passengers on its flights
For the past three months, the Finnish airline Finnair has been voluntarily weighing passengers and their carry-on luggage on flights departing from Helsinki Airport. During the weight check, the company anonymously records passengers' age, gender, and class of travel.
This process is necessary for studying seasonal variations to ensure safety during takeoff. Finnair stated that the weighing will be conducted alternately on short flights within the Schengen area and long-haul flights in February, and from April to May 2024, as reported by NBC News.
Satu Mannukka, the airline's Head of Ground Operations, stated, "During the previous measurements five years ago, a large number of volunteers wanted to participate in the weigh-in. We hope to have a good sample of volunteers this time, including both business and leisure travelers, to obtain the most accurate information possible."
It is noted that the airline currently uses its own average weight data from 2018. However, aviation authorities require this data to be updated every five years. Therefore, based on the results obtained, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency will review the average weight this summer and consider the figures obtained to calculate the balance and aircraft load from 2025 to 2030.
