Starting June 5, France is set to introduce a new €49 rail pass aimed at encouraging young travelers to explore the country by train this summer. Known as Le Pass Rail, this pass offers unlimited travel for €49 per month and is available to individuals aged 16-27.

Inspired by similar initiatives in Germany and the UK, the Le Pass Rail is designed to provide an affordable travel option for young people. It allows for significant savings on both daily commutes and long-distance journeys. The French government will fund 80% of the pass's cost, with the remaining 20% covered by regional councils. Most of the revenue generated will return to local authorities.

President Emmanuel Macron has actively promoted the new pass, emphasizing its benefits for both the environment and personal savings. This initiative follows a promise made by Macron in September to French YouTuber Hugo Décrypte. Current Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete also supports the pass, seeing it as a way for young people to discover the diverse regions of France.

Unlike Germany's and the UK's year-round rail passes, the Le Pass Rail will be available only for July and August 2024. The pass is valid for one month from the date of purchase and can be used on regional TER and Intercités trains, including routes such as Nantes to Lyon and Marseille to Bordeaux.

However, the pass does not cover services like TGV Inoui, TGV Ouigo, Eurostar, and Transilien trains in the Ile-de-France region, although it will be valid there starting in 2025. Users must adhere to specific terms, including restrictions on multiple journeys from the same town on the same day and a limit on the number of simultaneous bookings.

The pass will be available for purchase online through the SNCF Connect app and website, as well as the Trainline app. It is expected to attract around 700,000 young travelers, with a Trainline survey indicating strong interest among potential users.
