Thousands of Renfrewshire residents are experiencing a significant change in their travel routines thanks to the National Entitlement Card (NEC). This scheme offers free bus travel for those under 22, over 60, and disabled individuals across Scotland.

Introduced in January 2022, the young person's scheme has already enabled over 100 million journeys across Scotland. Specifically, in Renfrewshire, 2,364 young people and 32,094 seniors have benefited from the free bus travel provided by the NEC.

The scheme has seen a positive response, with 62% of eligible young people applying for their NEC. Parents can secure a card for their child starting from the age of five, ensuring free bus travel from an early age.

Gavin Newlands, the SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, emphasized the financial relief provided by the scheme amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. He highlighted the benefits of the free bus pass, including savings on household expenses, environmental advantages, and time efficiency. Newlands encouraged all eligible individuals who haven't yet applied to take advantage of this opportunity.

"Every journey using the free bus pass saves money, benefits the environment, and saves time," Newlands said. "During these challenging financial times, free bus travel offers significant daily savings for households commuting to work, school, shops, and other destinations."

The scheme has been particularly impactful for the most deprived communities, who rely heavily on bus services. It also complements other supportive measures such as the unique Scottish Child Payment. By reducing travel costs for older people, young individuals, and families, the policy has promoted a shift towards public transport and improved access to social, educational, and employment opportunities.

Newlands praised the efforts of Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government in funding and managing the scheme, especially amid budget constraints caused by Westminster austerity. The free bus pass has proved to be transformative, initially benefiting older citizens and now extending its advantages to the youth, marking a significant achievement in supporting the travel needs of Scottish families.
