Grand Central has submitted an application to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and started consultations within the rail industry to significantly expand its passenger services along existing routes. This expansion is set to enhance travel connectivity between key destinations in the North East and West Yorkshire with London, offering increased frequency and new direct journey opportunities. If approved, these services could launch as early as May 2025.

The proposed expansion includes two additional daily return services between London and West Yorkshire, increasing the total to six daily services and providing over 360,000 additional seats per year. This represents a 50% growth in services for West Yorkshire. Additionally, the North East route will benefit from an extra early morning departure from York to London Kings Cross and a late-evening return service, adding over 195,000 seats annually.

Travelers will also enjoy new direct services with four daily calls at Seaham on Grand Central’s North East routes, marking Seaham’s first direct connection to London. Furthermore, some of the new services will include additional stops at Peterborough, enhancing travel options for passengers.

"These proposed additional services are a significant step forward in Grand Central’s long-term strategic development," stated Sean English, Chief Operating Officer of Grand Central. "We are confident that expanding our operations will not only benefit our existing customers but also attract new travelers and stimulate growth in key markets."

English highlighted the importance of these proposals in providing customer choice within the rail industry and strengthening connections between communities and businesses. By offering competitive fares and high standards of service, Grand Central aims to make train travel the most attractive and affordable option for travelers across the country.

Grand Central is optimistic that the ORR and the wider rail industry will support this exciting expansion plan, promising to enhance travel options and connectivity for all passengers.
