Greek authorities are cracking down on overcrowding on beaches by utilizing drones and a citizen reporting app. This initiative is taking place across various popular Greek beaches. The enforcement measures have been in effect since new regulations were introduced in March 2024.

To tackle the issue of overcrowding and illegal sunbed placements on Greek beaches, drones have been deployed to monitor and ensure compliance with the new rules. These regulations state that sunbeds and umbrellas must be placed at least four meters away from the shore.

In conjunction with drones, the MyCoast app allows locals to report any violations. This dual approach aims to protect both the environment and the public's right to free beach access while supporting responsible tourism. Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kostis Hatzidakis, emphasized that these measures are designed to preserve Greece's natural beauty and support legitimate businesses.

The new regulations stipulate that beaches must be at least 70 percent sunbed-free, increasing to 85 percent in protected areas. Businesses must acquire permits through online auctions and are responsible for maintaining cleanliness and accessibility, including having lifeguards on duty.

So far, 14 beaches have been the focus of recent inspections, particularly those in protected 'Natura' areas. Kryoneri beach, for example, received the most complaints, with establishments reportedly exceeding their permitted areas. Other beaches under scrutiny include Valtos, Lagonisi, Nea Heraklia, Klima on Aegina, and Masouri on Kalymnos.

Popular tourist destinations such as Corfu and Rhodes are also seeing increased enforcement. Notably, the largest fine of €220,000 was issued to a business operating without a license on Thymari beach near Athens.

These new measures aim to reduce beach overcrowding and prevent the illegal privatization of public beaches. As the tourist season progresses, further actions are expected, including potential restrictions on cruise ships docking at Mykonos and Santorini starting in 2025.
