Historically unorthodox and staunchly independent, north Germany’s water-sculpted merchant city is investing in regeneration projects to give old spaces new life. Hamburg, known as Germany's "Gateway to the World," thrives where the River Elbe meets the North Sea. A city defined by its labyrinth of shipping channels, quays, and lakes, Hamburg's global influence and maritime history are palpable.

Miniatur Wonderland

Despite Hamburg's vast scale, its most popular attraction is the Miniatur Wunderland, the world's largest model railway. It features intricate models of famous locations, including a miniature Hamburg at its heart.

Kunsthalle

Hamburg's prominent art gallery, Kunsthalle, spans multiple striking buildings. It boasts a collection ranging from the Renaissance to the postmodern era, with a highlight being Caspar David Friedrich's "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog."

Chilehaus

A prime example of Hamburg's bold architecture, the Chilehaus is a 1920s expressionist office block resembling a ship’s prow. Its intricate carvings and unique design draw numerous admirers.

Bunker St Pauli

This WWII-era anti-aircraft tower is being transformed into a hotel, gig venue, memorial, and public space, set to open this summer. Visitors can enjoy the Hamburg skyline from its viewing deck.

Elbphilharmonie

Opened in 2017, the Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg's most iconic concert hall. Known for its innovative design, it offers a rich classical music program and breathtaking architecture.

St Pauli Piers

This quirky pub in Neustadt, featured in the TV show Großstadtrevier, boasts over 300 antique clocks. It’s a great spot to enjoy a Holsten Pils.

Große Freiheit 36

A historic club off the Reeperbahn, Große Freiheit 36 hosts gigs and club nights. It’s famed for its connection to the Beatles, who played here in the early 1960s.

Le Lion

A top cocktail bar decorated with cat sculptures, Le Lion is known for its signature gin basil smash, a refreshing drink with lemon and basil.
