Ryanair, a well-known low-cost airline from Ireland, has the largest number of flights in Europe. How do you avoid paying harsh fines and what can you take with you on the plane to make your trip a success?

We share with you information on what you can take on the plane and how to act when you need to expand your hand luggage allowance. All the nuances are described in the material on avianews.com.

Ryanair hand luggage weight and dimensions in 2023

According to the rules, Ryanair's basic hand luggage allowance allows you to take one item with dimensions up to 40x25x20 cm without weight restrictions.

It is noted that all items must be packed in this one item.

What to do if a passenger needs to carry more hand luggage

The passenger has the right to purchase the Priority boarding service, which is issued when booking the ticket. It is noted that this service will cost less - from 6 to 30 euros per flight, depending on the route and date of departure.

Thus, the passenger will be able to take on board two items: standard hand luggage with dimensions up to 40x25x20 cm without weight restrictions and additional hand luggage with dimensions up to 55x40x20 cm and weighing up to 10 kg.

The Priority service is already included in the more expensive Regular and Flexi Plus fares.

What you can take in Ryanair hand luggage

You can take a bag, suitcase, briefcase, camera, and other items with you into the cabin. The restriction applies to the size and weight of items.

If the dimensions of the items are exceeded

If you exceed the weight of your hand luggage during boarding, you will not be able to board the plane. Ryanair employees will simply not let you on. Passengers will be offered to pay a fine and put their hand luggage in the baggage.

Please note that the gate bag fee starts at 45.99 euros per suitcase.

How the size of hand luggage is measured

Ryanair employees measure hand luggage using scales and calibrators at the boarding gates. You place your suitcase in the calibrator. If your suitcase is larger than the required size, you will be asked to check it in as baggage and pay a fee.

Can I take a backpack on Ryanair

Ryanair passengers can take a backpack as hand luggage on the plane.

Its size should not exceed the hand baggage allowance according to your ticket.

This is 40x25x20 cm without weight restrictions for the cheapest tickets and 55x40x20 cm, weight 10 kg for tickets that include Priority boarding.

How to take a laptop with Ryanair

You can also take a laptop with you as hand luggage, but there is one thing to note - it is considered a separate item. Accordingly, if your ticket includes only one piece of hand luggage, you can take either a bag or a laptop.

The passenger can pack his laptop in a bag, in which case it will be considered as one item. The bag must not exceed the dimensions and weight of the allowed hand luggage.

Rules for carrying liquids in Ryanair hand luggage

It is noted that Ryanair does not regulate the transportation of liquids in hand luggage. This is done by the countries from which you depart.

According to European rules, liquids are allowed on airplanes in containers not exceeding 100 milliliters. The number of such containers should not exceed 10 pieces. Containers must be packed in a transparent bag with a volume of up to 1 liter and presented at security control separately from other items.

Please note that the details of the transportation of liquids can be found on the website of the airport from which you are departing. For example, starting June 28, 2023, Helsinki Airport allowed passengers to carry up to 2 liters of liquids in their hand luggage.

How to carry cigarettes with Ryanair

The carrier does not specifically regulate the transportation of cigarettes in hand luggage. At the same time, smoking is prohibited on board the aircraft. The export of cigarettes is prohibited from the countries you are traveling to. Check the customs website of your final destination country for quantity restrictions.

You can also use Google search. For Estonia, the query looks like "Estonia cigarettes entry requirements", for Germany - "Germany cigarettes entry requirements".
