Hong Kong Airport is set to transform the travel experience with a significant security upgrade costing HKD 800 million (USD 102 million). Over the next two years, the airport will introduce 50 new smart security screening lanes and 32 advanced full-body scanners. This upgrade aims to allow travelers to keep electronics and liquids in their hand luggage during security checks, addressing a common inconvenience.

Currently, the airport's security setup includes 35 lanes, each processing 240 passengers per hour. Post-upgrade, the streamlined system will feature 28 lanes, each capable of handling 360 passengers per hour, significantly boosting efficiency.

The upgrade incorporates several advanced technologies. An automated baggage handling system will serve three passengers simultaneously, while new computerized tomography (CT) X-ray machines will replace older scanners. These improvements will reduce screening times from 15 to 10 seconds, providing three-dimensional images of carry-on items for more thorough examination. Despite the convenience of not having to remove liquids and electronics, the restriction on carrying liquids over 100 ml will remain in place.

Hong Kong Airport's modernization plan highlights its commitment to improving passenger experience and maintaining high safety standards. The new measures are expected to reduce waiting times and streamline the security process, making the airport one of the most efficient in the region. This investment not only enhances security but also positions Hong Kong Airport as a leader in airport innovation and passenger convenience.

As these upgrades are implemented, travelers can look forward to a smoother and faster security process, reinforcing Hong Kong Airport’s status as a top global travel hub. This initiative is part of the broader strategy to adapt to growing passenger numbers and evolving security challenges, ensuring that the airport remains at the forefront of global aviation standards.
