Hand luggage rules for 2024 for airlines such as EasyJet, British Airways, Ryanair, and others have become stricter, including new requirements for carry-on baggage that must be checked in at the baggage compartment. Each airline, from TUI to EasyJet, has its own rules for free baggage allowance, depending on the number and size of bags.

The rules for carrying hand luggage on airlines often cause panic among tourists. To make your trip easier, the Mirror has prepared a guide to the 2024 baggage rules for the leading UK airlines.

Ryanair Hand Luggage Rules

Every Ryanair fare includes a small personal bag that must be placed under the seat in front of you. It can be a 40 x 25 cm backpack or a 40 x 20 cm carry-on bag.

If you need an additional bag, you will have to pay an extra fee. For example, if you choose the Priority fare with the option to take two carry-on bags, you will have an advantage in boarding: you will be the first to board and can take a small personal bag (40x20x25 cm) and a wheeled bag weighing up to 10 kg (55x40x20 cm). This avoids the need to wait for your luggage upon arrival at the airport. If Priority fare tickets are sold out, you can still purchase an additional checked bag weighing up to 10 kg.

Jet2 Hand Luggage Rules

You can bring one piece of hand baggage on board for free, provided it does not exceed 10 kg and measures 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including wheels and handles. If your carry-on baggage is heavier or larger, you will have to check it at the baggage claim and may be subject to an additional fee.

Alternatively, you can bring a small personal item, such as a purse, laptop bag, or shopping from the airport, which should fit under the seat in front of you. However, remember that you cannot consume alcohol purchased at the airport or before boarding during the flight.

"All hand luggage is carried in the cabin at our discretion, and we reserve the right to check it in the baggage compartment of the aircraft for operational or capacity reasons. If this happens, be sure to take all your valuables (including travel documents, money, medicines, keys, spare lithium batteries, and any electronic items containing lithium batteries) and carry them with you in the cabin," the company's office explained.

EasyJet Hand Luggage Rules

Each passenger is entitled to take one small hand luggage on board EasyJet aircraft free of charge.

Its dimensions must be up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels) and it must fit under the seat. This is convenient for essentials on a trip or short trip, and the weight can be up to 15 kg, but you will have to lift and carry the bag yourself.

For larger hand luggage, there is an option to order through Speedy Boarding for an additional fee, but the size remains limited to 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels.

EasyJet Plus cardholders or FLEXI fare holders can take an additional large handbag in addition to the small hand baggage within the privileges of their status or fare plan.

British Airways Hand Baggage Rules

If your flight reservation includes only hand luggage, you are allowed to bring one personal bag, such as a laptop bag or handbag, not exceeding 40x30x15 cm in size, including handles, pockets, and wheels. In addition, you can take an additional carry-on bag weighing no more than 23 kg and measuring no more than 56x45x25 cm.

These rules apply to airline fares that allow only hand luggage. However, on overcrowded flights, you may be required to check in a larger additional bag, despite the guaranteed cabin baggage allowance for your personal bag.

Any additional baggage must be checked in and counted towards your checked baggage allowance. Some British Airways fares include this in the booking; however, if you exceed the allowance due to the addition of extra carry-on baggage, you may be subject to additional charges.

TUI Hand Luggage Rules

With TUI, the baggage allowance may vary depending on the type of trip you book. For package tours on TUI Airways flights, each passenger (except for infants) can take one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg and measuring no more than 55x40x20 cm free of charge.

Passengers must be able to place their hand luggage in the overhead compartment. In addition, you can take a Trunki suitcase as hand luggage if its weight does not exceed 10 kg. In addition to your hand baggage, you are allowed to bring a small personal item such as a laptop, bag, or briefcase, which must be compact enough to be stored under the seat.

Virgin Atlantic Hand Luggage Rules

You may bring one piece of hand baggage not exceeding 10 kg free of charge, as well as an additional smaller bag such as a handbag or backpack. This applies only to Economy or Premium class passengers.

Infants and children under 23 months of age are allowed to carry one bag weighing up to 6 kg each, while children over two years of age have the same hand luggage allowance as adults.

The rules for baggage transportation are on the company's website.

Wizz Air Hand Luggage Rules

Wizz Air's baggage policy is similar to that of Ryanair: passengers can take one bag not exceeding 40x30x20 cm in size, which must fit under the seat in front of them, such as a handbag or laptop bag, not exceeding 10 kg.

For passengers who wish to take an additional overhead compartment bag, the WIZZ Priority booking option is available. It includes an additional carry-on bag up to 55x40x23 cm in size and weighing no more than 10 kg. If this option is not suitable, you can also pay extra for checking in additional baggage.

Wizz Air does not include wheels in their measurements, but the airline specifies that they should add no more than 5 cm to the total dimensions of the bag.
