A new species of gecko, the Korowai, has been discovered on the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand. It is limited to only 32 individuals and was described in 2023.

The rare species got its name from the local iwi tribe. Korowai, which literally means "cloak". The color of these geckos is distinguished by unique patterns on their backs, according to News Hub.

"It's really special because of where it was found and also because it has... unique markings - these special stripes on its back," said Melinda Rixon, senior ecologist at Auckland Council.

A five-year monitoring program conducted by Auckland Council has helped researchers gain a better understanding of the Korowai gecko, its population, and habitat.

"We need 10 years of data before we can determine whether the population is stable, increasing, or decreasing," explains Rixon.

The biggest threats to these fragile creatures are predators and habitat destruction.

"When people go from the beach to the dunes, they destroy the habitat, indirectly affecting these animals and sometimes directly," adds Malcolm Paterson of Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara.

The Auckland Council is urging residents and visitors to behave responsibly on the beach to preserve these unique and vulnerable animals.
