India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has launched a new feature allowing female-identifying passengers to choose seats next to other women. This initiative aims to improve the travel experience and address concerns about safety and comfort for female travelers.

A few months ago, IndiGo introduced this option in pilot mode, enabling women to see the genders of passengers occupying seats during web check-in. This allows them to avoid sitting next to male passengers if they prefer. The feature is based on market research and aligns with IndiGo's #GirlPower ethos.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers commented on the success of this initiative, noting its positive reception among passengers. He emphasized the airline's commitment to innovation and enhancing customer experience.

The response to this feature has been largely positive, particularly from women who have faced uncomfortable situations with male passengers in the past. While some argue that this measure only addresses the surface of a larger issue, many appreciate the immediate safety and comfort it provides.

However, the practicality of this feature has been questioned, especially in situations involving last-minute seat changes. Critics also suggest that a broader cultural and systemic change is needed to address the root causes of such issues.
