Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) stands out as one of the best-connected airports in the United States by public transportation. Unlike many other US airports that rely heavily on road access, Newark benefits from a comprehensive public transport network.

Many US airports, including major ones like John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), are poorly connected to public transit, limiting passengers' ability to travel beyond the immediate vicinity easily. In contrast, European airports such as London Heathrow (LHR) boast extensive public transport options. However, Newark Airport is an exception in the US, rivaling European airports in connectivity.

Newark Airport’s regional rail connections are particularly noteworthy. The airport is serviced by two New Jersey Transit lines: the Northeast Corridor Line and the Jersey Coast Line. These lines provide direct access to downtown Manhattan, allowing passengers to reach New York's Penn Station in less than 30 minutes. From there, they can connect to numerous subway lines and reach various parts of the city and beyond efficiently.

The Northeast Corridor Line connects Newark to destinations across central New Jersey, extending to Trenton and Princeton. The Jersey Coast Line offers frequent service to popular vacation spots along the Jersey Shore. These connections make Newark an excellent choice for both commuting to Manhattan and traveling to other regional destinations.

Newark Airport is also connected to the Amtrak network, which extends its reach along the entire Northeast Corridor. The airport's station serves the Northeast Regional and Keystone Service lines, providing connections to major cities from Boston to Washington, D.C., and as far west as Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This makes Newark one of only four US airports with scheduled Amtrak service, alongside Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), and Milwaukee International Airport (MKE).

Future plans to extend Newark’s connectivity include a rapid transit link to the Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH) system. Construction on this project began in 2020, with the first services expected to start in 2026. This addition will further enhance the airport's accessibility by providing direct connections to urban transit systems.

In addition to rail services, Newark Airport is served by multiple NJ Transit bus lines and private operators, making it accessible from various locations. This comprehensive public transport network solidifies Newark’s status as one of the best-connected airports in the United States.
