Japan Airlines and IndiGo Launch Codeshare Partnership
Japan Airlines (JAL) and IndiGo have announced a new codeshare partnership aimed at enhancing travel options between Japan and India. The collaboration, effective from the winter schedule of 2024, will allow JAL to increase its connectivity within India, leveraging IndiGo's extensive domestic network. Conversely, IndiGo customers will benefit from access to JAL's broad domestic and international routes.
Initially, the partnership will focus on codeshare flights connecting JAL-operated routes from Tokyo (Haneda-Delhi, Narita-Bengaluru) with IndiGo’s domestic flights. This strategic alliance aims to provide seamless travel experiences and foster stronger bilateral relations between Japan and India.
Through this agreement, JAL will significantly expand its reach across major Indian cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. IndiGo, holding over 60% of the Indian market share, is known for its punctuality and high-quality in-flight service, making it a valuable partner for JAL.
The partnership highlights the increasing popularity of Japan among Indian travelers and reflects ongoing efforts to ease visa regulations and strengthen trade and tourism ties. Both airlines plan to further extend their cooperation by eventually integrating IndiGo flights into JAL’s network, offering even more travel options.
Abhijit DasGupta, IndiGo’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning & Revenue Management, emphasized the partnership's potential to support trade and tourism between the two nations. He expressed optimism about the expanded travel opportunities this partnership will bring, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience for customers.
Ross Leggett, Senior Vice President of Route Marketing at Japan Airlines, expressed excitement over the partnership, noting the economic growth in India and the rising demand for air travel between the two countries. He highlighted the benefits of booking through a single ticket and the high service standards both airlines uphold.
This strategic move by JAL and IndiGo aims to facilitate cultural and business exchanges between Japan and India, offering travelers a more convenient and enriched travel experience. The planned codeshare routes are subject to government approval, with details to be announced in due course.
