Jetstar, a major low-cost airline in Australia, is under fire in both Australia and New Zealand for allegedly misleading customers regarding their rights to refunds and compensation. The airline is now facing legal action in both countries, with claims that it misinformed passengers about their entitlement to refunds for canceled flights and instead issued restrictive travel vouchers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Australia, a class action led by Echo Law accuses Jetstar of issuing travel vouchers to customers between 2020 and 2022, instead of providing cash refunds, as legally required. The vouchers allegedly imposed significant restrictions, reducing their value compared to the original ticket price. Echo Law argues that passengers should have automatically received their money back, and even those who used the vouchers may still be entitled to further compensation for the difference in value.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, the Commerce Commission (NZCC) is preparing to file charges against Jetstar for misleading consumers about compensation rights during flight cancellations or delays under the airline's control. The NZCC claims that Jetstar’s communications likely discouraged passengers from seeking rightful compensation between 2022 and 2023.

Jetstar has acknowledged some mistakes in processing compensation claims and has invited customers to resubmit claims for canceled or delayed flights. Legal proceedings are set to unfold in both Australia and New Zealand, but it is expected that a settlement may be reached before going to court.
