LNER Emphasizes Safety Measures for Families on Train Journeys
LNER is calling on families to prioritize safety during their train journeys, highlighting the importance of utilizing available services and adhering to safety protocols at stations. This comes after the release of CCTV footage showing recent incidents involving children at train stations.
The footage reveals three alarming events: a child falling between the train and platform at Darlington Station, a baby falling out of a buggy at Newcastle Central Station, and a young child climbing onto the tracks at Newark Northgate Station. Fortunately, these incidents resulted in only minor injuries.
This year, eight such incidents involving children have been reported at LNER stations. In response, LNER is using Rail Safety Week to inform parents and carers about the safety measures and assistance available at its stations to prevent similar occurrences.
LNER emphasizes the availability of assistance at its eleven managed stations, which can be requested upon arrival or pre-booked online or via phone through the Passenger Assist service. Each station has a waiting area, including a dedicated family lounge at London King’s Cross, to minimize time spent on platforms.
Platforms feature tactile surfaces and clear yellow markings to indicate safe standing areas, with LNER staff present during train arrivals and departures to provide guidance. Warrick Dent, LNER’s Safety and Operations Director, stated, "Traveling by train is generally safe, but incidents like those captured on CCTV, though rare, do occur. We recognize the challenges of traveling with children and want to ensure parents are aware of the services we offer to make their journey safer."
Olivia Timms, a Station Customer Services Assistant, shared her experience of witnessing a child fall onto the tracks, emphasizing the importance of vigilance. "It was a distressing incident, especially with a train passing through moments later. Fortunately, everyone was safe. We encourage families to be aware of their surroundings and seek assistance if needed."
For families planning train journeys, being aware of and utilizing available safety measures can help ensure a safer travel experience.
