Indonesia’s islands are often seen as idyllic destinations, but they also attract large crowds. Ally Wybrew explores Lombok, a more affordable and quieter alternative to Bali.

Earlier this year, I visited Lombok, Bali’s lesser-known sister island, just a 90-minute ferry ride away. Similar in size but with fewer inhabitants, Lombok offers the same intricate temples, tropical climate, and natural beauty without the crowds and high prices of Bali.

Despite its proximity, Lombok remains under the radar compared to Bali and the popular Gili Islands. The island's tourism industry began to develop in the 1980s but suffered setbacks in the late 90s due to financial crises and political unrest. A devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2018 further hampered its growth. However, the island is now on the rebound.

Since the pandemic, Lombok has attracted a new wave of travelers. In 2022, it was added to the MotoGP calendar, drawing motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. Last year, Singapore Airlines introduced a new route to Lombok, making it more accessible. Development is also booming along its southern coastline, with new high-end properties like Innit Lombok, a collection of six luxury villas on a private beach in Awang Bay.

Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, with properties in both Bali and Lombok, highlights the distinct charm of each location. The Oberoi Beach Resort in Lombok offers a more serene experience with expansive green spaces and untouched beaches, unlike the busier shores of Bali.

Travelers who visit Lombok find it more affordable than Bali, especially during the off-season. While the ferry or flight from Bali adds extra cost, expenses on the ground are significantly lower. The quieter ports, less hectic roads, and unique conservation projects like Project Hiu, a shark conservation initiative, provide meaningful and enriching experiences.

Despite the convenience of Bali, the extra effort to reach Lombok is worth it. Ferries between the islands are frequent and affordable, with some routes costing as little as $11. More comfortable options, such as private speedboats or a short 40-minute flight, are also available.

Lombok’s tranquil environment and unspoiled beauty make it a hidden gem worth exploring before the rest of the world discovers it.
