Travelers in London are facing significant disruptions due to escalating strikes by engineers essential to the operation of London Trams, formerly known as Croydon Tramlink. Unite, the UK's leading union, announced that the strikes will intensify from the end of June, affecting key travel routes in South London.

The engineers, who initially went on strike in March, are protesting pay discrepancies. They earn up to £10,000 less annually than their London Underground counterparts despite having the same qualifications and performing similar roles. Unite had paused further industrial action to negotiate with Transport for London (TfL), but talks failed to resolve the issues, leading to a new wave of strikes.

From 30 June to 8 July and from 11 July to 15 July, tram, stores, and infrastructure engineers will strike. This will disrupt services in Croydon and South London, including routes crucial for tourists and local travelers.

The union emphasizes that TfL's approach to employing tram engineers is unfair and unacceptable, as they are paid significantly less than their underground counterparts. This unfair treatment has led to the decision to continue with the strikes, which are expected to significantly impact travel plans.

For travelers, the impact is significant. The strikes coincide with the Wimbledon tennis championship, a major event attracting thousands of visitors. Commuters and tourists using trams to reach Wimbledon and other South London destinations will face delays and potential cancellations.

Past strikes in March caused weeks of disruption to London Trams services. With the upcoming strikes, travelers can expect similar operational impacts. Tourists planning to explore Croydon and South London are advised to seek alternative transport options or adjust their travel plans to avoid the affected dates.

The union places the responsibility for the disruption squarely on TfL, citing their failure to address the pay discrepancies and other issues as the cause for the continued industrial action. Travelers should stay updated on strike developments and plan accordingly to minimize the impact on their journeys.
