Lufthansa is redirecting several flights from other countries to meet the surging demand for travel in India, which is currently the fastest-growing major market for the German airline.

This was stated by Chief Commercial Officer Heiko Reitz. Lufthansa's capacity to India is now 14% higher than it was before COVID-19, even though some other markets have not yet fully recovered, according to Yahoo reports.

"India is growing faster than our other destinations. We are reallocating our capacity from other markets and allocating it to India", - he added.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes Swiss Air, currently operates 64 flights per week to India, an increase from 56 before the pandemic.

India is the fifth-largest civil aviation market in the world and is expected to more than double its domestic passenger traffic to 350 million passengers by 2030 from 152 million in 2023, with international passengers rising to 160 million.

India's airlines have placed record orders for aircraft, and the country's total fleet is expected to increase to more than 2,000 by 2030 from about 700 now.

The government is investing $12 billion to build new airports and renovate existing ones.
