Network Rail has announced a substantial investment of £4.5 million to upgrade the Eskmeals viaduct on the Cumbrian coastline. This project is aimed at future-proofing the area against the effects of climate change and ensuring a smoother travel experience for both local and visiting travelers.

The upgrade involves replacing the current hardwood timber beams with synthetic materials that double the lifespan of the viaduct from 25 to 50 years. This enhancement not only strengthens the structure but also reduces the need for frequent maintenance, minimizing disruptions for travelers in the long run.

For those planning a visit to the picturesque Cumbrian coast, these improvements promise a more reliable and enjoyable journey. With the region's natural beauty and attractions drawing tourists year-round, the enhanced viaduct will support smoother travel, ensuring that visitors can focus on enjoying their trip rather than worrying about potential train delays.

Travelers visiting the area can enjoy several notable attractions. The Eskmeals Dunes, located halfway between Barrow and Whitehaven, offer a beautiful and unique coastal experience. These dunes are perfect for a serene walk, but visitors should be aware of tide schedules and potential access restrictions due to their use by the Ministry of Defence as a firing range. Additionally, the nearby Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway provides a charming heritage train ride through scenic landscapes, making it a must-visit for train enthusiasts and families alike.

During the upgrade, there will be a closure of the viaduct to trains for sixteen days from September 6th to September 23rd. To accommodate travelers, a rail replacement service will be provided, ensuring that connections between Millom and Sellafield/Whitehaven remain operational. Additionally, an amended timetable will be in place between Barrow and Millom to reflect these changes.

This investment is not just about infrastructure; it's about enhancing the overall travel experience for visitors to the Cumbrian coastline. With reduced maintenance needs and a stronger viaduct, travelers can look forward to uninterrupted journeys and more time to explore the stunning landscapes and historic sites of the region.
