On the morning of November 1, 2024, a man from Ridgewood, New Jersey, was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) after TSA officers discovered a handgun in his carry-on bag. During routine X-ray screening at Terminal C, TSA officers identified the firearm inside the man’s blue backpack, immediately removing him from the security line. Port Authority Police officers were alerted, promptly confiscating the weapon and taking the individual into custody.

Upon questioning, the man claimed he carried the weapon due to prior experiences as a crime victim. However, he seemed unaware of TSA’s stringent rules, which prohibit firearms in carry-on luggage. TSA officials reminded the public that firearms are only allowed in checked baggage, securely stored in a locked, hard-sided case and declared to the airline in advance. This incident follows a similar case at Newark earlier in the month, when a passenger attempted to transport a disassembled gun concealed in a LEGO box.

In the U.S., while firearm ownership is permitted, TSA regulations strictly limit how firearms can be transported in airports and on flights. The TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey, Thomas Carter, emphasized, "Firearms are never permitted through an airport security checkpoint." Those violating these guidelines, like today’s passenger, face both criminal charges and federal civil fines, which can reach $15,000. Additionally, offenders risk losing TSA PreCheck privileges.

As firearm incidents at TSA checkpoints persist, officials urge passengers to review safety and transport guidelines on the TSA website to avoid severe legal and financial consequences.
