As SAS prepares to leave Star Alliance, Lufthansa's Miles & More program is offering a status match challenge for SAS EuroBonus members. This initiative aims to help frequent fliers retain their Star Alliance perks.

In April, SAS announced its departure from Star Alliance in August 2024, following its Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceedings and acquisition by Air France-KLM, a SkyTeam member. Consequently, SAS will join SkyTeam in September, leaving its frequent fliers to lose Star Alliance benefits. Lufthansa is stepping in with a status match challenge, guaranteeing status until February 2026 for EuroBonus members.

The Miles & More Status Match Challenge is available to EuroBonus members across three status levels. EuroBonus Silver members can receive Frequent Traveller status, EuroBonus Gold members will be matched to Senator status, and EuroBonus Diamond and Pandion members will also receive Senator status. Each level has specific requirements: Frequent Traveller status requires two flight segments with Lufthansa Group airlines or Miles & More partners by November 30, while Senator status requires six segments within the same period. Initially, status is granted until February 2025, extending to February 2026 upon completing the challenge.

The status match challenge involves a simple five-step process:

  1. Register with Miles & More.
  2. Take a photo or screenshot of your EuroBonus membership card, showing your name, membership number, and expiry date.
  3. Upload the details and photo/screenshot to lufthansa.statusmatch.com.
  4. Once validated, you'll be registered for the Status Match Challenge.
  5. Complete the challenge to extend your status.

With SAS leaving Star Alliance, significant network changes are expected. SAS will focus on SkyTeam hubs, including new routes from Copenhagen to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, launching soon with Airbus A330-300. SAS CEO Anko van der Werff has indicated that the airline will gradually untangle from its Star Alliance network in North America, favoring SkyTeam connections.

In summary, Lufthansa's status match offers SAS EuroBonus members a seamless transition within the Star Alliance, ensuring continued access to valuable perks and benefits.
