Train services were restored after significant disruptions caused by a fire near the railway tracks on London Road in Stevenage. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 9, and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. The fire damaged multiple telecommunications and signaling cables over a small portion of the railway, resulting in significant delays in train operations. In total, hundreds of meters of cable need to be replaced, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Engineers from Network Rail worked overnight to repair the signaling system, and train services were back up and running the following day. Further efforts to repair the protective covering of the cables will continue throughout the weekend. The director of the East Coast route expressed gratitude to passengers for their understanding during the challenging journeys.

In addition to technical delays, passengers are advised to consider that ongoing repair work may affect the frequency of trains during peak hours. Travelers planning trips through Stevenage are recommended to explore alternative routes in advance to avoid any unexpected issues. The latest updates can be tracked through the railway service mobile applications.

Alternative routes for passengers traveling through Stevenage may include using parallel railway lines and bus services. One possible route is traveling via Welwyn Garden City, which can be accessed by both train and bus. For instance, Great Northern and Thameslink offer connections with transfers along this section. Additionally, Arriva Herts and Essex buses provide regular services every 30 minutes between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City.

As repair work continues, passengers are advised to stay informed about any potential service changes and plan their trips accordingly. Despite significant progress in restoring normal operations, remaining infrastructure work may cause minor disruptions during peak hours. By checking the latest updates and exploring alternative travel options, passengers can minimize inconvenience and ensure smoother journeys.
