A new hiking trail, the Cammino Retico, has been inaugurated in Italy's Dolomites massif. Spanning 170 kilometers, this trail traverses the Veneto and Trentino regions, offering stunning scenery and promoting sustainable tourism.

Italy, renowned for its cuisine, charming villages, and beaches, also caters to hiking enthusiasts. The Dolomites, a favorite among hikers, now feature the Cammino Retico, a trail designed to showcase lesser-known parts of Italy. This 170-kilometer loop trail passes through ten secluded villages at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,500 meters. The Cammino Retico aims to draw hikers to less-visited areas, promoting sustainable tourism. The trail, developed by the Carpe Diem association, is named after the ancient Rhetians who once inhabited the Alpine region, particularly Trentino.

Starting and ending at Aune di Sovramente in Belluno, the trail allows hikers to explore the footsteps of the ancient Rhaetian people. Along the route, hikers will encounter breathtaking views of the Dolomites, wild valleys, limestone cliffs, and historical landmarks such as the Sanctuary of San Vittore and Corona, the Feltrino fjord on Lake Corlo, and the fortified town of Feltre. By 2025, cyclists will also be able to enjoy this route via a parallel bike path.

The Cammino Retico is part of a broader campaign to encourage sustainable tourism in Italy. This initiative aims to disperse tourist traffic from heavily visited areas to less known but equally enchanting locales. The trail not only provides an opportunity for physical activity but also fosters a deeper appreciation of Italy's natural and historical heritage. Hikers will traverse a variety of landscapes, from lush forests to rocky outcrops, experiencing the rich biodiversity of the region. The trail is accessible to hikers of all levels, making it an inclusive adventure for families, solo travelers, and seasoned trekkers alike.

The trail boasts 50 accommodation options in mountain communities, with dining available in nearby villages. These accommodations range from rustic mountain huts to cozy bed and breakfasts, offering a comfortable resting place after a day of hiking. The Carpe Diem association offers a traveler's passport and a diploma for those who complete the route, providing a tangible memento of the adventure. Additionally, local guides are available to enhance the hiking experience with their knowledge of the area's flora, fauna, and history.

With its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and commitment to sustainability, the Cammino Retico is poised to become a must-visit destination for hikers. Whether you're seeking a challenging trek or a peaceful walk through scenic landscapes, this new trail offers something for everyone.
