In June, two new challenging segments will open on the Gold Mountain Via Ferrata route in Ouray, Colorado, known as the "Little Switzerland of America." These new sections are designed for experienced climbers seeking extreme challenges.

Via Ferrata, which translates from Italian as "iron path," is a fixed climbing route consisting of metal rungs embedded in the rock. The Gold Mountain Via Ferrata route was first opened in 2022 and quickly became popular among tourists due to its accessibility for beginners. The new segments add an extra level of difficulty, allowing experienced climbers to test their skills on what is now the most challenging route in North America.

The first new segment features 200 feet (approximately 60 meters) of overhanging climbing combined with elements of rock climbing. The second segment is unique: a 300-foot (approximately 90 meters) climb leading to an overhanging rock roof that climbers traverse using a "monkey bar" style. These new segments are rated 5+ on the Fletcher/Smith scale, whereas the main route varies from 3 to 5.

The new sections are entirely optional and lead back to the main route, allowing climbers to choose the path that suits them best. Logan Tyler, head of Basecamp Ouray, which partnered with Gold Mountain Ranch to create the route, noted that the new segments offer climbers the opportunity to test their limits and overcome personal challenges.

All climbs on the Gold Mountain Via Ferrata must be conducted with a local guide from Basecamp Ouray. Prices start at $200 per person and include all necessary equipment, shuttle service, and professional guide services.
