This autumn, Italy will introduce two new express train routes that promise to significantly enhance travel options for tourists. The new services will connect Rome with the historic town of Assisi in Umbria and the renowned wine region of Alba in Piemonte. These routes are part of a broader initiative aimed at improving rail connectivity to popular tourist destinations across the country.

The launch of these trains is particularly significant for travelers seeking to explore Italy’s rich cultural and scenic landscapes. The Express Assisi, operating on weekends from early October to December, provides a direct link between Rome and Assisi, a town famous for its medieval architecture and association with St. Francis. This route offers a convenient option for visitors who wish to experience the charm of Umbria without the need for complex travel arrangements. Additionally, the availability of comfortable amenities such as private lounges and a bar/restaurant carriage makes the journey both pleasant and efficient.

For those interested in Italy’s wine regions, the Express Langhe-Monferrato is a noteworthy development. This night train connects Rome to Alba, located in the heart of Piemonte’s wine country. With departures every Friday in October and on October 31, and returns scheduled for Sundays, this service allows travelers to easily access one of Italy’s premier wine regions. The addition of sleeping cars ensures that passengers can rest comfortably, making it an ideal option for a weekend getaway focused on wine tasting and exploration.

Assisi, known for its well-preserved medieval center, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually. The town’s most famous landmark is the Basilica of St. Francis, which houses the tomb of its namesake. Beyond its religious significance, Assisi offers visitors a chance to explore its historic streets, Roman ruins, and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The new train route provides an efficient and comfortable way for travelers to reach this cultural gem, enhancing access to one of Umbria’s most significant towns.

Alba, on the other hand, is a key destination for food and wine lovers, located in the Langhe region of Piemonte. The town is internationally renowned for its white truffles and Barolo wine, making it a must-visit for culinary enthusiasts. Alba also hosts the annual Alba White Truffle Fair, drawing visitors from around the world. The introduction of the night train service from Rome makes it easier for travelers to experience the gastronomic delights of this region without the stress of lengthy travel times. This new connection is set to boost tourism in Alba, providing more opportunities for visitors to explore its rich culinary heritage.
