A newly extended rail ticket from Great Western Railway (GWR) offers fully flexible weekend travel, providing passengers with a wider range of route options for their journeys. The Long Weekender ticket now allows travelers to embark on trips on Fridays or Saturdays and return on Mondays across more than 5,500 different route combinations, including trips towards London for the first time.

Initially launched earlier this year, the Long Weekender ticket was designed to provide affordable and comfortable weekend getaways. Previously limited to specific routes from London, the expanded ticket now offers greater flexibility and significant savings on a wider range of journeys.

For example, a trip between Paddington and Hereford with the Weekender ticket costs £109 compared to £281.20 for a peak Anytime return, a saving of 61%. Other routes, such as Paddington to Worcester, Gloucester, Exeter, Cardiff, Bath Spa, and Bristol, also offer significant savings ranging from 57% to 66%.

For travelers, this expansion means more options for spontaneous weekend trips. The Long Weekender ticket allows for departures at any time on Friday or Saturday, including peak hours, and returns at any time on Monday, offering more than 50% off the cost of a peak Anytime return. This flexibility is particularly valuable as more people choose to travel over the weekend, and Monday trains are less crowded due to changes in work patterns.

According to GWR Sales & Marketing Director Amanda Burns, the new ticket addresses the changing travel habits of passengers. With fewer people commuting on Mondays, there is an opportunity to expand leisure travel options.

Travelers can book the Long Weekender ticket exclusively on GWR's website. The initiative aims to make weekend getaways more accessible, with greater flexibility and cost savings.
