Online platforms and innovations: How technological advances shape the future of travel
With technology acting as the glue that connects every part of the journey, the travel and tourism industry is changing dramatically.
NewsBytes spoke to Punit Kumar, Director of South Asia, Middle East, Hong Kong Tourism Board, to understand how technology is shaping the future of travel and looked at several trends related to it.
Online platforms replace travel agents and guides
There's no denying that technology is having a profound impact on the travel industry.
"The traditional reliance on travel agents and guidebooks has given way to online platforms and mobile apps, which give travellers the ability to search, compare prices, and book flights, lodging, and activities effortlessly," Kumar says.
According to him, this accessibility has empowered travellers by giving them unprecedented control over their itineraries.
VR and AR take travel to the next level
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are revolutionizing the travel experience.
Innovative programmes that include attractive travel packages, neighbourhood tours, and city hospitality create a friendly environment for travellers.
"In Hong Kong, augmented and virtual reality technologies have revitalized tourism by making exploration more accessible, cost-effective, and convenient," Kumar says.
He adds that initiatives such as 360 Moments of Hong Kong are an example of how technology can redefine travel.
Technology is seamlessly intertwined with the art world
Kumar emphasizes that combining technology with art creates an immersive experience that transcends traditional boundaries.
"Hong Kong's Future Park is a prime example where the concept of co-creation thrives, inviting visitors into a fabulous realm where interactive entertainment unfolds at the intersection of technology and art," he says.
Works such as Graffiti Nature, Light Ball Orchestra, and Van Gogh's Immersive Effect demonstrate this integration.
Technology is driving innovative solutions for greener travel
"With the growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly practices, technology is driving innovative solutions for more environmentally conscious travel," the travel expert says.
He adds, "The travel industry is adapting to the changing preferences of today's travellers, from smart transportation to eco-friendly lodging."
This transformation is particularly resonant among millennials and Generation Z, he concludes.
