A controversy has erupted in Florence, Italy, after a female tourist was photographed miming a lewd act on a statue of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and excess. The incident occurred near the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, with the photos shared online by the social media account Welcome To Florence.

The images, taken at night, show the woman not only miming the act but also kissing the life-size statue. This Bacchus statue is a modern replica of a 16th-century work by sculptor Giambologna, with the original housed in the nearby Bargello museum. The online photos quickly garnered attention and sparked outrage among social media users, many of whom called for the woman’s arrest.

Florence's local authorities and cultural heritage advocates reacted strongly to the incident. Patrizia Asproni, president of Confcultura, an association dedicated to promoting Italy's cultural heritage, condemned the act as part of a broader trend of disrespectful behavior. She urged for the implementation of stringent measures similar to those in Singapore, including rigorous checks, hefty fines, and a zero-tolerance policy towards such misconduct.

As Florence grapples with overtourism, incidents like the recent one involving the Bacchus statue highlight the ongoing tension between welcoming tourists and preserving the city’s cultural integrity. The call for stricter regulations and greater respect for cultural sites continues to grow among both officials and residents.
