Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport To Build New Terminal Amidst Rising Demand
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), known as "America's Friendliest Airport," has greenlit plans for a new terminal to cater to increasing passenger demand. The environmentally-friendly facility will be constructed at the airport's west end and is expected to cost half a billion dollars.
The airport set a new record last year, with over 48 million passengers passing through its two terminals. The upward trend continued into this year, with nearly four million passengers in January and over five million in March.
According to Business Traveler, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced the new terminal, which will feature net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and a new customs facility. The facility aligns with plans for Phoenix to host events during the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles. The new terminal will be crucial if Phoenix handles international traffic for the games.
PHX's passenger numbers have surged, especially after hosting the Super Bowl last year. In March, the airport set a new monthly record with over five million passengers, driven by events like Major League Baseball Spring Training and NASCAR races.
The new terminal, set to be located near the site of the demolished Terminal 2, has been a concept since Terminal 4 opened over three decades ago. The Phoenix Aviation Department estimates the facility will cost around $500 million, and the city council is discussing the expansion timeline.
