The Rheingau region in Germany, stretching from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim am Rhein, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, historic castles, and exceptional vineyards. Located just a short trip from Frankfurt, this area is a haven for food and wine enthusiasts, offering a blend of ancient traditions and modern culinary creativity. Here’s how to plan an unforgettable food weekend in Rheingau.

Rheingau is characterized by its 7,800-acre spread of vineyards and quaint villages like Kiedrich, Hattenheim, and Assmannshausen. These villages are home to restaurants that feature local wines and Rheingauer cuisine, highlighting ingredients like wild boar, venison, mushrooms, and berries from the nearby forests, as well as high-quality meat and dairy from the Taunus mountains.

Where to Eat in Rheingau

  1. Groenesteyn, Kiedrich
    • Located in a historic half-timbered house, Groenesteyn offers spectacular views and Michelin-starred farmhouse cuisine. Chef Dirk Schröer’s menu includes dishes like beef roulade with white asparagus and halibut with rhubarb and leek. The extensive wine list and the view of Scharfenstein castle add to the charm.
  2. Schloss Vollrads, Oestrich Winkel
    • This 800-year-old estate is a must-visit for riesling lovers. Chef Alexander Ehrgott pairs regional dishes like fried veal steak with estate wines. The estate's gardens are perfect for a leisurely morning chat and wine tasting.
  3. Gasthaus Zur Schlupp, Walluf
    • Run by the Ehrhardt family since 2000, this restaurant offers Mediterranean-influenced cuisine using regional produce. Chef Michael’s dishes, such as sweet tomato soup with wild garlic dumplings and roast wild goose, reflect his childhood memories and culinary creativity.
  4. Adler Wirtschaft Franz Keller, Hattenheim
    • Known for its vibrant atmosphere and farm-to-table philosophy, this inn serves dishes like goose liver parfait with riesling jelly and white asparagus in béarnaise sauce. The meal often concludes with a glass of schnapps from a mobile cart.
  5. Jean, Eltville
    • Located in the self-proclaimed ‘wine city’ of Eltville, Jean combines French flavors with regional ingredients. Chef Johannes Frankenbach’s menu features dishes like duck foie gras with creme brulee and veal kidneys with spinach. The extensive wine list includes selections from both Rheingau and Bordeaux.

Don't Miss

Exploring Rheingau's vineyards on foot is the best way to experience the region. Self-guided walks along trails like the Rheinsteig or guided tours with Bottlestops offer immersive experiences. Bottlestops’ ‘Sunday Wine Excursion in Rheingau’ and ‘Castles, Abbeys and Wine Tour’ are excellent options for learning about the region’s viticultural history while tasting wines at historic estates.

Where to Stay

Zum Krug, Hattenheim

  • This charming hotel blends historic charm with modern comforts. The Laufer family’s 18th-century inn features stained glass windows, exposed beams, and beautifully crafted furniture. The restaurant serves local dishes like handkäse cheesecake and wisperforelle trout in riesling sauce. Rooms start at £130 per night, including breakfast.
