Portland International Airport (PDX) is inviting the public to participate in a "dress rehearsal" to test the new main terminal before its official opening later this year. Volunteers will simulate real travel scenarios to ensure the new systems and processes function smoothly.

In preparation for its new terminal debut, PDX is seeking volunteers to test various travel procedures such as check-in, bag drop, and security screening. This trial will take place on August 3, 2024, as listed on Eventbrite, and will involve thousands of local participants. Volunteers will spend about two and a half hours acting out typical travel day activities, providing feedback to help fine-tune the terminal’s operations. Participants will be rewarded with $50 gift cards, refreshments, and snacks, along with the satisfaction of contributing to the launch of the new PDX.

The "dress rehearsal" welcomes individuals of all ages, abilities, and communities. Volunteers will follow two to three different traveler scripts, engaging in check-in and security processes, exploring new spaces, and experiencing typical travel day activities. Each participant aged 16 and above must register individually and bring a government-issued ID that matches their registration details. Volunteers are encouraged to bring travel essentials such as snacks, empty water bottles, and small items like medications, but must leave behind weapons, prohibited items, and pets.

Starting in August 2024, the first phase of the new terminal will open, showcasing new check-in counters, a pre-security Market Hall, two security stations, and a public space with stadium seating and a mezzanine restaurant. Additionally, the terminal will feature 12 new local shops and restaurants, streamlined security processes, and new art exhibits. One highlight is the return of the iconic teal carpet, a beloved feature of PDX that had been missing for nearly a decade.

The new designs at PDX aim to elevate the passenger experience, making travel more efficient and enjoyable. This community-involved "dress rehearsal" will play a crucial role in ensuring that every detail is perfect for the airport’s grand opening.
