Lisbon, Portugal's capital, is known for its picturesque scenery, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. Famous for its hilly landscape and iconic yellow trams, Lisbon has been described by Lonely Planet as a "postcard-perfect panorama of cobbled alleyways, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals." In 2023, Lisbon was the top tourist destination in Portugal, attracting nearly 6.5 million foreign visitors.

Despite its popularity, Lisbon remains one of Europe's most cost-effective city break destinations for 2024, provided you plan carefully and stick to a budget.

Greg Wilson, founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, noted, "This summer, many travelers will opt for a budget-friendly city break. Our survey found that 35 percent of people spend more than they want on holiday. We analyzed twelve popular European cities, considering factors like distance from the airport, tourist taxes, and key costs such as meals, beers, and public transport."

One of Lisbon's advantages is its proximity to the airport, just 13.12 km from the city center, making it more economical for travelers compared to cities like Rome, where the airport is 37 km away. Lisbon’s tourist tax is also relatively low at €2, compared to Rome's €7.50 and Amsterdam's €13.50.

Dining and drinking in Lisbon are budget-friendly as well. An average meal costs around €14, and a local beer can be enjoyed for just €3. In comparison, the average price of a pint in London is €6.85, making Lisbon's beer notably more affordable.

Lisbon attracts visitors for its historical charm and cultural richness. Tourists can explore the ancient streets of Alfama and Mouraria, visit top-rated restaurants, and ride the iconic yellow trams. The city offers a beautiful backdrop with its glistening river and ornate tiling, perfect for a weekend of exploration.

Popular museums include the MAAT (Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia) and the Museu Nacional dos Coches. No trip to Lisbon is complete without trying a pastel de nata, a sweet custard tart. Pastéis de Belém, established in 1837, is a renowned spot for this treat.
