London travelers may face significant disruptions as 1,600 bus drivers employed by London United are being balloted for potential strike action, as reported by Unite, the UK’s leading union. The drivers, who serve South, West, and Central London, are in dispute over pay and working conditions, which could have a notable impact on public transport.

The ballot comes after drivers rejected a four per cent pay offer, viewing it as a real terms pay cut, given the 5.1 per cent Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation rate in December 2023 when the pay increase was supposed to be implemented.

London United, part of the French state-owned RATP Group with a turnover of €6.5 billion in 2023, is under scrutiny from its drivers over inadequate scheduling agreements and proposed enhancements to terms and conditions.

For travelers, this means that if the strike goes ahead, bus services across South, West, and Central London could see substantial interruptions. This would affect daily commutes, sightseeing tours, and general travel plans within the city, making alternative transport options a necessity.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham noted that the drivers are frustrated with their employer's efforts to keep their pay low, despite the RATP Group's substantial earnings. She emphasized that the union is fully supporting the drivers in their fight for fair compensation and better working conditions.

With the strike ballot closing on 22 July, travelers should prepare for potential disruptions. Unite regional officer Michelle Braveboy highlighted that any disruption to bus services would be the direct responsibility of London United. She pointed out that the company had ample time to offer a fair deal but chose not to, though there is still time to negotiate an acceptable offer to avoid the strike.

For those planning to visit London or navigate the city during this period, it is advisable to stay informed about the strike developments and explore alternative transportation methods, such as the London Underground, cycling, or ride-sharing services.
