Record growth: one of Turkey's largest airports sets a new record
Sabiha Gokcen Airport served 37.1 million travelers in 2023. Thus, the second-largest airport in Turkey catered to a record number of passengers in its history.
It is noted that this milestone was achieved more than a month after the opening of the second runway, which doubled the airport's capacity. This was reported by the airport administration on its page on the social network X (formerly Twitter), as reported by Daily Sabah.
This figure exceeded the previous year's result of 30.8 million in 2022 and surpassed the historical peak of 35.5 million passengers, which was recorded just before the suspension of air traffic in 2019.
Presently, Sabiha Gokcen Airport serves 162 destinations, including 122 international and 40 domestic routes, with a capacity of 41 million passengers. It is reported that this air hub can currently handle 90 million passengers per year.
However, the airport is continuing its development. After the completion of four phases of construction and expansion, including six runways, the administration expects that by 2028, the airport will be capable of serving 200 million passengers per year.
