Ryanair Exposes eDreams as Top OTA Pirate for Overcharging

In its latest OTA Pirate survey released on March 4th, Ryanair has once again highlighted the issue of overcharging by online travel agencies (OTAs), naming eDreams as the leading offender. According to the survey, eDreams has been charging customers an excessive 135% markup, amounting to €23.50, for reserved seating options that are available on Ryanair's own website for just €10. This isn't the first time eDreams has been singled out for such practices; it previously faced criticism in Ryanair’s January survey for marking up reserved seat prices by 125%.

Ryanair's efforts to combat these deceptive practices extend beyond merely identifying the culprits. The airline is actively calling on the governments of the UK and Spain, as well as EU consumer protection agencies, to take decisive action against what it deems as "OTA piracy," which includes not only overcharging but also the invention of bogus charges that exploit consumers.

Dara Brady, a spokesperson for Ryanair, expressed the airline's frustration with the ongoing issue, emphasizing the need for regulatory intervention. “It is unacceptable that despite these OTA Pirates repeatedly overcharging and scamming unsuspecting consumers, their UK and Spanish Govts and EU consumer agencies have still not taken any action," Brady stated. He pointed out that other OTAs, such as Opodo, are also guilty of similar practices, including charging customers 129% more for a 10kg bag and levying non-existent “premium" service fees.

Ryanair’s persistent campaign against OTA piracy aims to shed light on these unethical business practices, advocating for stronger consumer protections. The airline's call to action is not just about bringing these issues to the public's attention but also urging authorities to implement measures that will put an end to such exploitation, ensuring a fairer and more transparent booking process for all travelers.
