Civil unrest near Haiti's main airport has caused problems with flights to and from the country for several days. The chaos began on Thursday, and although the number of canceled flights from the United States was lower on Friday, airlines still fear for the safety of crew and passengers.

Sunrise Airways from Haiti canceled some flights for security reasons, as reported by Simple Flying. Spirit Airlines also canceled a flight from Fort Lauderdale, which departed only a day later.

It is reported that shootings near the airport in Port-au-Prince have damaged some aircraft. Gang conflicts have plagued much of Haiti in recent years, but last week's shooting directly affected passenger safety at the airport.

American Airlines canceled a flight from Miami on Thursday but resumed it on Friday. The airline said it would continue to monitor the situation.

An attack on the Haitian National Police Academy, which is located next to the US Embassy, provoked a shooting that left one police officer wounded and damaged airplanes on the runway.

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs has placed Haiti on the Tier 4 list of countries and does not recommend traveling here while clashes continue in the region.

Warring gangs have disrupted vital supply lines in Port-au-Prince and are terrorizing Haiti, which should be considered by all tourists who have planned a trip.

If the gangs are not pacified, further delays and flight cancellations are possible.

As TravelWise previously reported, an earthquake hit the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti last year.
