Spain Tops List for Cleanest Beaches in Europe
As summer approaches, more people head to Spain than any other country for their holidays. Spain boasts a record-breaking number of blue flag beaches, making it a top destination for beachgoers.
Spain has 628 blue flag beaches, the highest number in the world. These flags are awarded to the cleanest beaches at the start of the summer and are removed at the end. This renewal process ensures that beaches maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the season.
Spain's diligent beach cleaning efforts have been rewarded with numerous blue flags. Conde Nast Traveller noted, "With over 600 pristine shores, Spain won a Guinness World Record in 2022 for the most Blue Flag beaches and has held the record for two consecutive years."
One of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Spain is Burriana Beach in the southern resort town of Nerja. This dark-golden sand beach offers rental sun loungers, well-maintained toilets, a scuba diving area, and even a library. It is surrounded by a promenade full of souvenir stands, shops, and a variety of restaurants.
With 628 beaches to choose from, there are plenty of options for tourists. Barcelo highlights Isla Antilla in Huelva, describing it as "surrounded by natural beauty" and equipped with toilets, sun loungers, and a sailing school. La Barrosa Beach in Cádiz is another recommended spot, known for its beach bars and suitability for surf and nature lovers.
Other notable mentions include Cala Ferrera Cove in Mallorca and Cap Blanche in Alicante. Spain's diverse and well-maintained beaches make it a perfect destination for summer holidays.
