Spain’s smallest city, Frias, is a picturesque location with a population of just 275 people and an area of 12 square miles. Situated just over an hour’s drive from Bilbao in northern Spain, Frias is known for its long history and serene landscapes, making it a unique destination for visitors.

Despite its modest size, Frias has held city status since 1435, granted by King Juan II of Castile. The city features charming houses perched on La Muela crag and the 10th-century Castle of the Dukes of Frias. This historic castle can be visited for just €2, with free entry for children. The castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and provides visitors with a chance to experience medieval Spain. One visitor on Tripadvisor described it as an "excellent castle in an unspoiled medieval village" and praised the great views from the towers and the unique, narrow streets.

Frias also boasts other attractions, such as the Catholic church Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir and Alfonso VIII Park. The city, despite its small size, caters well to tourists with its restaurants, souvenir shops, and even a hotel. Visitors can enjoy local delicacies, shop for unique souvenirs, and stay overnight in comfortable accommodations.

A notable feature of Frias is its car-free streets. Built centuries before the invention of cars, its streets were never widened to accommodate vehicles. Visitors must park their cars outside the city and explore on foot. This restriction adds to the city's charm, allowing tourists to wander its medieval streets without the noise and pollution of modern traffic.

The nearest airport to Frias is in Bilbao. Alternatively, visitors from the UK can take a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, offering a scenic route to this enchanting medieval city. The journey itself can be an adventure, providing stunning views of the northern Spanish coastline.

Frias, with its rich history and tranquil environment, offers a unique travel experience that combines cultural heritage with natural beauty. Its small size and car-free policy make it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger cities.
