Spokane International Airport (GEG) has implemented new real-time photo verification technology to enhance passenger identification during security checks. The introduction of advanced CAT-2 units allows passengers to have their identities verified more efficiently through facial recognition technology, part of an ongoing effort by airports to increase security and streamline travel.

The new CAT-2 units at GEG build upon earlier versions, integrating a camera that captures a real-time image of the traveler. This image is then compared to the photo on the passenger’s identification card using facial recognition technology. Once a match is confirmed, a TSA officer reviews the details, allowing the passenger to proceed with security checks.

Although the technology is optional, passengers may find the system offers a more convenient and faster airport experience. GEG has placed these new units at its A/B and C security checkpoints, with more expected in the future. The airport assures travelers that images are not stored after verification, addressing privacy concerns.

With many airports in the US adopting similar technology, the trend towards real-time facial recognition verification is gaining momentum. While some lawmakers have raised concerns about privacy, the benefits of enhanced security and efficiency are expected to outweigh the risks for many travelers.
