A local storm on Wednesday severely disrupted high-speed train traffic connecting Paris to southeastern France and Switzerland, stranding thousands of travelers during the Olympics and the start of summer vacations.

The SNCF, France’s national rail company, reported that all high-speed trains to and from Paris's Gare de Lyon were halted due to a tree falling on the tracks and being struck by a train in Burgundy. Regular-speed trains were unaffected as they use different tracks. Authorities cut power to the affected tracks and began removing the tree, but the SNCF indicated that the issue would not be resolved quickly. Passengers on the impacted trains were returned to a station to find alternative travel options.

France’s national weather agency, Meteo France, issued warnings for "locally strong" thunderstorms with heavy rain and wind in most regions, placing the Paris region under a lower-level alert and central and southeastern France under a mid-level alert. Additionally, a heatwave persisted, with Paris temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) for the third consecutive day.According to Meteo France, numerous regions in France are experiencing significant weather disturbances. The national weather agency has issued alerts for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in various parts of the country, which may cause further travel disruptions. Travelers are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and heed local advisories to ensure safety and minimize delays. For the latest updates, visit the Meteo France website.

This incident is a significant inconvenience for travelers, particularly those heading to or from Paris during the peak of the summer holiday season and the Olympics. The disruption means that many have to scramble to find alternative means of transportation, whether it’s regular-speed trains, buses, or flights, which can add stress, time, and cost to their journeys.

In addition, travelers already wary of high travel costs due to the Olympics might face even higher expenses and delays. With train traffic heavily impacted and potential thunderstorms still looming, the situation remains uncertain, prompting many to reconsider or adjust their travel plans.
