Göten, a small Swedish town with a population of about 5,000, has launched an innovative campaign to attract new residents by offering land for just 1 krona (€0.08) per square meter. This initiative aims to address the challenges of an aging population and declining birth rates.

Anyone can purchase land in Göten without any specific restrictions. The town's mayor, Johan Månsson, hopes that the plots will attract interest from people abroad. He noted that while building a house involves significant costs, reducing land prices could be a crucial step in making the dream of owning a home attainable for many families.

However, it is presumed that only those legally residing in Sweden would be eligible to buy the land. An important requirement is that buyers must begin building on their plot within two years; otherwise, the land will revert to the municipality. The main goal of the campaign is to make land more accessible and affordable, thereby encouraging people to build homes despite the current economic situation.

The campaign in Göten will continue throughout 2024 and 2025. After this period, the initiative might not be extended, depending on the economic situation. The town hopes that by then, the local economy will stabilize, and the demand for land will return to normal levels.

Göten offers unique opportunities for new residents by combining affordable land prices with the beauty of Swedish nature. The success of this campaign could serve as a model for other small towns facing similar demographic challenges.
