Austrian Airlines has introduced two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners into its fleet, with plans to expand to 11 by 2028. These aircraft will replace older, less efficient models and improve long-haul route economics. The first 787 entered service on May 19, and the second on June 21, 2024. Here’s a look at the routes they will be flying.

Current Fleet and New Additions

Austrian Airlines currently operates six Boeing 777-200ERs, three 767-300ERs, and two 787-9s. The 787s, initially ordered by Hainan Airlines and later part of Bamboo Airways, feature 294 seats: 26 in business class, 21 in premium economy, and 247 in economy. These Dreamliners will significantly lower fuel consumption, despite higher ownership costs, making them a strategic addition for long-haul routes.

A Quick Look at the Two Aircraft

  • OE-LPL: Arrived in Vienna on May 14, began operations on May 19 for crew training on German routes, and started long-haul service to New York JFK on June 15.
  • OE-LPM: Arrived in Vienna on June 20 after modifications in Taipei and entered service on June 21 with flights to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt.

Summer 2024 Routes

From June 21 to October 26, 2024, Austrian Airlines' 787s will operate on the following routes:

  1. Vienna-Frankfurt: Daily until June 27, then twice-weekly until August 28.
  2. Vienna-New York JFK: Replacing the 777-200ER, running six times a week until October 25. The 767-300ER will take over from October 27.
  3. Vienna-Chicago O'Hare: Replacing the 777-200ER, operating six times a week from June 28 until October 26. The 777-200ER will resume from October 27.

Winter 2024/2025 Routes

Starting October 27, when the winter schedule begins, the 787s will focus on Star Alliance hubs with the following plans:

  1. Vienna-Newark: Replacing the 777-200ER, operating daily. The 767-300ER will supplement this route, running four times weekly, while the 787 will operate three times weekly.
  2. Vienna-Washington Dulles: Replacing the 767-300ER, with the 787-9 operating five times weekly and exclusively throughout the winter.

In Conclusion

Austrian Airlines' introduction of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners marks a significant upgrade in their fleet, focusing on efficiency and improved passenger experience. With the new routes, the airline aims to enhance connectivity and service quality, ensuring a smoother, more efficient travel experience for passengers on key long-haul routes.
