On November 5, 2023, an EasyJet plane flying from Scotland narrowly avoided crashing into Lake Geneva for reasons that have not been specified. The Airbus A320 Neo, carrying 157 passengers, was approaching the airport when it suddenly descended to a dangerously low altitude.

According to Swiss air traffic controllers, the plane was only 30 seconds away from crashing into the water before they could warn the pilots. According to The Mirror, instead of the usual altitude of about 700 meters, the plane flew at 230 meters above the water.

When the controllers noticed that there was less than a minute left before the collision with the lake, they shouted to the pilots to check the altitude, which the crew promptly did, avoiding a disaster.

Afterward, the Airbus A320 Neo made a second circle and landed without incident. None of the passengers or crew were injured. The Swiss Air Safety Investigation Service (SESE) is still investigating the circumstances of the incident.

According to preliminary data, the crash could have been caused by human error. The pilots were suspended from flying temporarily, but were later allowed to resume their duties.

An EasyJet spokesperson stated that passenger safety was not compromised and that the company was cooperating with SESE.
