The new requirements for electric scooters in Spain that you need to know
All vehicles for personal use (VMPs) sold in Spain must have a certificate that guarantees compliance with the technical requirements stipulated by national and international regulations and established by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). The rules stipulate that all scooters that appear on the market from January 22, 2024, must be labeled with a plate indicating the vehicle's license plate, the name of the establishment where it was purchased, and the characteristics of the scooter.
Among the characteristics that must be met are a speed indicator and a braking system with two independent brakes. They will not be able to drive at speeds above 25 km/h, at which the engine will stop moving the vehicle, and will have a traction control system. This was reported by usanews.net.
They must also have a visible indicator for speed and battery level information. In addition, they must have two independent brakes, and those with more than two wheels must also have a parking brake.
Also, electric scooters must be equipped with front reflectors (white), on both sides (white or yellow) and rear reflectors (red). The brake light must be differentiated or combined with the rear light.
For already purchased vehicles, the DGT provides for a moratorium until 2027. During this time, users will have to adapt their vehicles to the requirements approved by the executive branch.
