The opening date of the new airport in the capital of Greenland has been announced

A modern international airport to serve the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, will open in 2024. Preliminary services for visitors to the island and locals will begin in May, and the grand opening is scheduled for November next year.

Although Greenland's population is only about 60 thousand people, the destination is expected to be popular among tourists. This is the third airport that will be able to serve large commercial aircraft on the island, Simple Flying writes.

The new airport was built by Kalaallit Airports (KAIR), which is supported by the local government.

It is reported that a partial opening can be expected before the tourist season in May 2024. The newly constructed airport facilities, including the new terminal, will open then. Passengers may not expect an enchanting celebration.

However, in six months, on November 28, the airport will be opened in a grand manner. A new 2,200-meter runway will be unveiled at the same time.

"We are confident that the airport will be a game-changer not only for Nuuk but for the entire country. The grand opening and celebration of the new international airport will reflect the importance of this historic event," the statement said.

Along with the opening, Greenland is expected to expand its international air services. Currently, there are only 5: three with neighboring Iceland, and one each with Denmark and Norway.
