Picture this: it’s 7 am at Copenhagen airport, and you're about to embark on a journey to an unknown destination. The departures board lists your flight as heading to 'unknown Schengen', and your boarding pass simply says 'fictitious'. With a suitcase filled with uncertain clothing choices, you're filled with excitement for the adventure ahead.

This is SAS's inaugural 'Destination Unknown' trip, where 180 passengers board a flight without knowing their final destination. The concept aims to bring back the thrill of adventure to travel, offering a unique experience for those seeking something different.

"In the old days, travel was an adventure," says Alexandra Kaoukji, Head of Media Relations at SAS. "But these days it has become a commodity. So how do you make it special again?"

Mystery travel, a rising trend in Europe and beyond, offers travelers the chance to book air tickets and travel packages without knowing where they're headed. Airlines like Wizz Air and Lufthansa, as well as travel companies like Opodo and Black Tomato, offer mystery travel options, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Journee, based in London, takes mystery travel a step further by curating individual trips based on customer preferences. With mystery destinations matched to traveler interests, it's a chance to explore somewhere new without the hassle of planning.

The appeal of mystery travel lies in its ability to maximize time and inject spontaneity into the travel experience. In a world where planning a holiday can feel overwhelming, mystery trips offer a refreshing escape from decision fatigue.

But what if you don’t like the destination? Optimism and flexibility are key. While disappointment is a risk, embracing the unknown can lead to unexpected discoveries and memorable experiences.

Despite criticism for its environmental impact, mystery travel can still offer sustainable options. Many companies strive to promote eco-friendly practices, from choosing sustainable accommodations to arranging excursions to off-the-beaten-path spots.

So, what should you pack for a mystery trip? Layers and versatile clothing are essential, as you never know what the weather or activities will be like. But in the end, the joy of mystery travel lies in embracing the unknown and letting go of expectations.

As for me, sitting in a farm on the outskirts of Athens, chatting with fellow travelers, I realized the true essence of mystery travel: the joy of discovery and the thrill of being somewhere new. Despite the uncertainties, I would gladly embark on another mystery trip, ready for whatever adventure awaits.
