The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that 2023 was recognized as the safest year for aviation. Thus, since the statistics on global aviation safety have been recorded, no fatal accidents involving passenger jets were reported last year.

However, there was one fatal accident involving a turboprop aircraft. In January 2023, a Yeti Airlines passenger plane with 72 people on board - 68 passengers and 4 crew members - crashed in Nepal due to loss of control, Business Traveller reports.

It is reported that the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) program provides reports on accidents and incidents, ground damage, and flight data from more than 470 different industry participants. IATA reported that in 2023, the risk of fatalities decreased to 0.03, compared to the previous year and the five-year average of 0.11.

"However, one turboprop accident with 72 fatalities reminds us that we can never take safety for granted. Two high-profile accidents in the first month of 2024 show that even though flying is one of the safest activities a person can perform, there is always room for improvement. This is what we have done throughout our history. And we will continue to make flying even safer," said IATA Director General Willie Walsh.

Earlier, TravelWise reported what tips will help ensure passenger safety during the flight.
