Embark on one of the world’s greatest coastal drives along the Pacific Coast Highway, stretching from San Francisco to Santa Monica. This iconic route offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, charming surf towns, majestic redwoods, and a touch of old-school glamour. Spanning 656 miles along State Route 1, the journey promises a memorable adventure with scenic vistas, exciting stops, and unique experiences.

Day 1: Monterey

Starting with the Golden Gate Bridge in your rear-view mirror, drive 60 miles south to Pigeon Point Lighthouse near Pescadero. This towering lighthouse provides a perfect vantage point to observe snoozing seals. Continue further south to Monterey, known for its colorful fishing boats and historic Cannery Row, now filled with indie shops housed in repurposed warehouses. Don't miss tasting the abalone at Aubergine, sourced locally from Monterey’s Municipal Wharf 2.

Day 2: Carmel-by-the-Sea

Just four miles south of Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea boasts quirky charm with no street addresses and a permit required to wear high heels. Clint Eastwood once served as mayor of this unique town. Recently, a wave of new restaurants has attracted visitors. Be sure to book ahead at Chez Noir, a European-inspired restaurant with a Michelin star. Also, try Stationæry for diverse offerings like lobster rolls and sausage bánh mì.

Day 3: Big Sur

Entering Carmel Highlands, you’ll find the gateway to Big Sur, one of the most scenic drives in the world. The 90-mile stretch of Route 1 from Carmel to San Simeon winds between sheer rock faces, offering spectacular Pacific views. Cross the iconic Bixby Bridge and stop at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to explore the redwoods. Don’t miss the stunning ocean views from Nepenthe, a favorite of Elizabeth Taylor.

Day 4: San Simeon

As you approach San Simeon, the rolling hills of grapevines signal your entry into wine country. Make a stop at Baileyana, a tasting room in a former schoolhouse. The highlight here is Hearst Castle, the opulent mansion of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Book a tour to marvel at its lavish interiors and historical artifacts. Also, visit the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery to observe these magnificent creatures.

Day 5: Santa Barbara

Continuing south, you’ll encounter palm-fringed beaches and quaint towns. Stop at Pismo Beach, known for humpback whale sightings from December to April. Arriving in Santa Barbara, you’ll be charmed by its coastal promenade lined with palm trees and white stucco homes. Explore the Funk Zone district, featuring galleries, microbreweries, and surf shops. Don't miss a visit to fortune teller Madame Rosinka at Stearns Wharf, California’s oldest working wharf.

Day 6: Santa Monica

Conclude your journey in Santa Monica, a vibrant seaside hub. Enjoy the rides at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier and watch bodybuilders at the nearby Original Muscle Beach, a historic spot for acrobats and stunt performers. Cap off your trip with a film at the Aero Theatre, an art deco gem operating since the 1940s.
