As a vegetarian or vegan, you might tend to avoid traveling to several countries whose cuisine is largely centered around non-vegetarian offerings.

Although Uzbekistan is often included in this list of destinations, discovering delicious and authentic vegetarian Uzbek food is quite feasible. According to News Bytes, you can find a variety of vegetarian dishes in every corner of the country.

On your next trip, consider trying these four dishes:

Uzbek Flatbread

Uzbek lepeshka is a flat, round bread baked in a clay oven, providing it with a toasty and crispy appeal.

Locals sometimes enhance the flavor by adding onions and herbs to the dough.

Interestingly, it is never cut with a knife as doing so is considered disrespectful. Instead, it is torn apart by hand before being eaten.

Chalop

This traditional dish allows you to explore the seasonal and fresh produce of Uzbekistan, filled with authentic herbs and spices.

The cold yogurt soup is made with various vegetables and seasoned with ryazhenka; the taste of garlic and basil stands out.

Locals prefer to enjoy it on a hot day to beat the high temperatures.

Sumalyaka

An ancient dish believed to restore health in winter, Sumalyaka (also called samana) contains only sprouted wheat and water as ingredients.

The wheat is soaked for several days, and the entire dish is ready within a few days.

Historically, it was a festive or women's dish.

Samsa with Pumpkin

This is the Uzbek version of the Indian samosa from street food.

The dough, filled with sweet and spicy pumpkin, is greased with sheep fat instead of butter and baked in a clay oven.

The result is a soft, puffy, and pleasant-to-chew delicacy, making it popular in the country's local cuisine.
