Tragedy off the Coast of the Red Sea: Tourist Yacht Capsizes

A large-scale rescue mission is ongoing near Egypt’s Red Sea coastline after a tourist vessel overturned in the water. The yacht was carrying 31 holidaymakers along with 13 crew members. Up to this point, 33 individuals have been saved, while seven others, including two British nationals, remain unaccounted for. Among the rescued were five people discovered alive 48 hours after the incident, raising hopes that additional survivors may yet be found.

The yacht embarked from Hurghada on a planned five-day excursion across the Red Sea. Early on Monday morning, a massive wave reportedly hit the boat, prompting an emergency call. In just seven minutes, the vessel sank after capsizing. Rescue teams reported that much of the yacht’s structure was underwater, with only a small portion visible above the surface. Those who survived were found trapped in cabins where an air pocket provided them with oxygen until help arrived.

Challenges of the Rescue Operation

Rescuers faced significant difficulties during the operation. Divers described the mission as extremely challenging due to strong underwater currents and the constant threat of shark attacks in the area. Despite the risks, rescuers managed to enter the flooded cabins and retrieve both survivors and the bodies of four deceased passengers.

The Red Sea: A Popular Tourist Destination

The Red Sea is renowned for its diving and underwater exploration opportunities, attracting tourists from around the world. However, this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with sea travel, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The Egyptian Navy, using helicopters and ships, continues the search for the remaining missing passengers.
